Do you know anyone who likes to keep a light on at night when they sleep? I think most children have said “don’t turn all the lights out!” to their parents when they were young, Sometimes complete darkness can be frightening for children at night and a nightlight can be a great solution. What about as an adult? Have you ever wished it would just stay light all the time? Depression and loneliness are known to have a greater effect on people during the night as opposed to the day. It even has a name; “winter depression.” This is due the fact there are less daytime hours in the winter than in the summer.
Martin Downs, MPH, a writer for webmd.com says; “winter depression is still a mystery to scientists who study it. Many things, including brain chemicals, ions in the air, and genetics seem to be involved. But researchers agree that people who suffer from winter depression -- also known as "seasonal affective disorder," a term that produces the cute acronym SAD -- have one thing in common. They're particularly sensitive to light, or the lack of it.” http://www.webmd.com/depression/features/seasonal-affective-disorder (accessed 8/13/2012).
I am not a medical doctor or a scientist, but I can confirm that night time can be “dark” time for those who are going through difficult times, trials, sickness, grief, depression, sadness, loneliness, etc. Is it a chemical, genetic, mental, or faith problem? Maybe it’s a combination of one or more of those things. Regardless of what it is, I am lover of light! I personally would like to live in a glass house with beautiful views and direct sunlight. Oh yes, I would have curtains for privacy at night, however, during the day I would open every curtain as wide as can be and let all the light in for as long as possible. If money were no issue I would have timed mechanical curtain rods that would open the curtains just before sunrise!
Did you know the Bible says “God is Light?” It does...
1 John 1:5 (NKJV)
This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
Does this mean the light from the sun is God? No. In all actuality God was light before He created the sun, moon and stars! Let’s compare Genesis 1:3 (the first day) and Genesis 1:14-15 (the fourth day)…
Genesis 1:3 (NKJV)
Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
Genesis 1:14–19 (NKJV)
14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years;
15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.
16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.
17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth,
18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
The light of God existed on the first day; however, it wasn’t until the fourth day that He created the light of the heavens we know as the sun! If God is light and the sun is not God, then what is the “light of God?” What kind of light was He talking about in verse three?
Kenneth Copeland explains it well:
From Genesis to Revelation, God is Light! So, using Scripture to interpret Scripture, we can assume that in Genesis 1:3 when God said, “Light be!” He actually released his own substance (Light) into the void that was space. He released Himself – His own creative, glorious, compassionate, life-filled glory (that's one of the Bible words for it) and that glory became the envelope for the universe. It made a kind of container in which all material things began to form – the planets, stars, the oceans and every other natural element. In other words, God's Glory-Light became the basis of all matter. (Kenneth Copeland, “The Blessing of the Lord,” pages 40-41)
The speed of the sun’s light is 186,000 miles a second or approximately 700 million miles an hour! It may be the fastest thing we are currently aware of, but I believe the light of God (His Glory and Presence) is in the realm of no time! His presence is not the light of the sun or moon. His presence is the light of His Glory! His light is the light of His Word! This means His light is faster than the speed of light – it is instant! No matter how many “light years” you may be from God, as soon as you call on Him – HE IS THERE INSTANTLY! Why because He never left, He is always there and always ever present. Hebrews 13:6 says “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
If that’s the case, then His light does not cease at night!
Psalm 119:105 (NKJV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
Psalm 119:130 (NKJV)
The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.
Psalm 27:1 (NKJV)
The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 89:15 (NKJV)
Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! They walk, O Lord, in the light of Your countenance.
Romans 13:12 (NKJV)
The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
1 Peter 2:9 (NKJV)
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
The Day of the Lord is when Jesus returns!
The Day of the Lord
Zechariah 14:6–7 (NKJV)
6 It shall come to pass in that day that there will be no light; The lights will diminish.
7 It shall be one day which is known to the Lord Neither day nor night. But at evening time it shall happen that it will be light.
The New Jerusalem will be lit not with the sun but with the glory of God!
Revelation 21:23 (NKJV)
The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.
Is this important? It sure is! Now, even in the darkest of night, you can have the Light of God. It’s available to all - all day, all night, every day, every week, and everywhere!
Remember, God is Light, and in Him is no darkness! He is a light to your path, the entrance of His Word gives light, and He has called you out of darkness and into His marvelous light! Keep the Light of God on! Don’t let depression or sadness take over your life! For people who know the joyful sound - the light never goes out!
Shout it out loud… THE LORD IS MY LIGHT AND MY SALVATION; WHOM SHALL I FEAR? THE LORD IS THE STRENGTH OF MY LIFE; OF WHOM SHALL I BE AFRAID? I HAVE THE JOYFUL SOUND AND MY LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT!
Keep the Light on,
